Let’s do a quick overview here before I throw out some information.
Pagan: Within a European Christian context, paganism is a catch-all term which has come to connote a broad set of not necessarily compatible religious beliefs and practices (see Cult (religion)) of a natural religion (as opposed to a revealed religion of a text), which are usually, but not necessarily, characterized by polytheism and, less commonly, animism. There is little organized “-ism” in paganism.
Wicca: the name most modern day Witches use for the Craft. It comes from the Anglo-Saxon word Wicce, meaning to bend or to shape. This is the root word from which we get wicker.
Witch: Used in entirely different contexts, and within entirely different cultural references, it can take on distinct and often contradictory meanings. Each culture has its own particular body of concepts dealing with magic, religion, benevolent and harmful spirits, and ritual; and these ideas do not find obvious equivalents in other cultures.
So what is it I exactly believe, then? t’s a little fuzzy…but… The simplest explanation is that I believe in a duality of diety. There’s a god & goddess that are equal. I’m not too picky on what you want to call them at all, since while I’ve been tagged, I haven’t been given the name of who’s chosen me. Probably a test…and one that I promise to work on…as soon as I have time to do something other than daily observance.
The names aren’t important to me because they’re all the same. If I call it an apple and you call it a fruit, does it really matter? Most of the book religions get all bent out of shape about names because somebody held up some rocks and said “don’t take the Lord’s name in vain” – so don’t. But really, when you have a bunch of canonized folks that were, believe it or not, mortal that you’ve given designations to and told to ask to intercede on your behalf…does it really matter that you call them saints and I call them gods? Does it matter that you think of Mary as the Holy Mother and I call her Isis? details…they are the devil at the times.
There’s a bunch of posts (in the category witchy) that stem from a meme and from other write out loud posts from a board I’m on. If you want to dive into that, it’s a good place to see my thoughts on the whole subject.
